This type of cannon was used on the rails of the warships, privateer or pirate ships, as a warning instrument, an alarm, and also to prevent the enemy from boarding as it was possible to shoot at the skiffs or canoes that approached the ship. It is totally made of bronze; it has a steel inner lining part to reinforce it. It does not have any correction beyond the erratic movements made by the marksman. It is fastened to a Y that has a rod at its end to be attached to the rails of the ship. It has the year “1720” engraved on it; that was the time when the famous pirate and privateer Bartholomew Roberts used similar cannons in his flagship The Royal Fortune; he was famous not only for his good manners but also for his cruelty. His nickname was Black Bart. Features: Caliber: 1.73 inches (golf ball). Tube length: 57 cm. (Steel interior shirt). |
