Using its Model MD2 and MD3 rifles as a basis, IMBEL developed an updated 5.56 mm standard assault rifle (Model MD97L). Model MD97L was developed for Brazilian Armed Forces standard uses. These rifles employ a gas-operated multilug rotating bolt and carry over the STANAG 4179 magazine interface. A folding stock is standard and Model MD97L can accommodate a M203 40mm grenade launcher.
