Made as a joint collaboration between Carl Walther Gmbh Sportwaffen and Smith & Wesson on base of famous Walther P99 (even though P99 was never made in .45 ACP). Frame and internal parts were made in Germany by Walther and barrel and slide in the USA by Smith & Wesson who also assembled and distributed this pistol in the USA. The SW99 is striker fired, recoil operated, locked breech semi-automatic pistol whose mechanism derived from John M. Browning’s cam-lock system. The function of the SW99 is identical to Walther P99 even though design of the gun is slightly different, the grip and trigger guard both have a slightly different shape. The grip of SW99 was designed by Cesare Morini, famous Swiss match pistol grip designer. The SW99 was delivered with a set of 3 interchangeable backstraps. The pistol lacks a manual safety; instead a de-cocking button is placed on the top rear section of the slide, which when actuated, places the firearm into double-action mode. The SW99's rear sight is adjustable for windage. Changes in elevation are handled by one of four quick-change front sights provided with the gun. Variants: SW990 & SW990L (Double Action Only mode), SW99QA (shorter and lighter trigger pull), W99C (compact version)
