The Hawken is a symbol of the period that saw the passage from the long and heavy small caliber Pennsylvania rifles to more practical and powerful Plains rifles, and the definite abandoning of the flintlock for the far more modern percussion system. The strong barrel and the larger calibre (rarely smaller than .50), enabled hits on any target with surprising accuracy as well as a powerful amount of energy. This rifle soon became the inseparable friend of the lonely Mountains men, and the most famous explorers in the new territories of the American continent. The success of this gun has to be attributed to Jacob and Samuel Hawken, brothers, who starting from about 1840, produced the gun in their gunsmith shop in Saint Louis, Missouri. The Rocky Mountain Hawken is offered with the maple stock and walnut sotck in .54 caliber with a barrel having 7 grooves obtained by broaching, rust brown colour finish, steel metal parts. |
