For a long time, Marlin produced a less-expensive Glenfield line of Model 336 rifles for retail at mass merchandise and department stores. Those rifles were mechanically identical to the Model 336 but made to be cheaper in production. They had birch stock, no checkering so that they could be placed on marked with lower price. One of these Glenfield rifles was Model 30A. The Glenfield Model 30A was improved in 1983 by adding a cross-bolt safety in 1983 and than become Glenfield Model 30AS. Same year Marlin discontinued the name Glenfield so Glenfield Model 30AS become Marlin 30AS with retail price of $250. The flat-top receiver with side-ejection makes it easy to mount a scope. Micro-Groove barrel with full length magazine tube. It is considered that Marlin 30AS is best buy of all Marlin .30-30s. Later in production it become Model 336AS.
