The Heckler & Koch G3 was a selective-fire automatic battle rifle made in cooperation of the Spanish state-owned design and development agency CETME (Centro de Estudios Técnicos de Materiales Especiales) and Heckler & Koch. In 1950, the Spanish Army needed a modern select fire shoulder rifle so they started designing a new rifle on basis of the breech mechanism of the StG.45. After 5 years of development they asked Heckler & Koch to join and to adjust their new CETME rifle to new standardized 7.62x51 NATO caliber. Heckler & Koch helped with further development so production started in 1959. Over 7,000,000 of them were made by 1997 when production ended. Original G3 was based on the CETME Modelo B. It had a wooden stock and hand guard. After building original G3 many sub variants were made like: G3A1, G3A2, G3A3, G3A3A1, G3A4, G3A4A1, G3KA4 or G3KA4A1. After initial production by Heckler & Koch many other firearms manufacturers across the world started to made licensed-copies of G3 for their armies. Some of those manufacturers are: Rheinmetall, SEDENA, Defense Industries Organization, FBP, Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfabrik, Husqvarna Vapenfabrik, Hellenic Arms Industry, Kongsberg Vapenfabrikk, MAS, Military Industry Corporation, MKEK, Pakistan Ordnance Factories and Royal Ordnance Bangladesh Ordnance Factories. The G3FS is abbreviation of German word FREISCHWINGER which literally means "free-floater" which is misleading because the barrel is not free-floating but fixed by the front sight base, to the charging tube. |
