Likewise with a few other Colt plans, the 1851 Navy (alongside a few Southern made duplicates) served on the two sides of the Civil War and soldiered on for a long time thereafter in the possession of such men as 'Wild Bill' Hickock and 'Bison Bill' Cody. With over a fourth of 1,000,000 fabricated somewhere in the range of 1850 and 1873, the 1851 Navy was one of the most famous, seemingly perpetual, and generally experienced "cap n' ball" guns in the wild west.
