The 1873 Single Action Army Revolver is one of the most well know guns in history. No Colt revolver has earned greater fame than the Single Action Army. This single action, solid frame revolver is also known as Model P, Peacemaker, SAA, M1873, Colt .45 and "The Gun That Won the West". It was designed by Colt's engineers William Mason and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards in 1872 and production started in 1873 under the name: "New Model Army Metallic Cartridge Revolving Pistol". It was made with a 4 inch barrel (Banker's Special or Storekeeper model), 4.75 inch barrel (Civilian or Gunfighter model), 5.5 inch barrel (Artillery Model) and 7.5 inch barrel(Army or Cavalry model). It was originally chambered for .45 Colt black powder centerfire cartridge but later it was made in various calibers. The 1873 Single Action Army Revolver has no special drop-proof safeties, it is strongly recommended that it should be carried with the empty chamber under the hammer (with only 5 rounds loaded). Records on the SAA are a Who’s Who of action-oriented Americans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among others, such names as Buffalo Bill Cody, Theodore Roosevelt, John Wesley Hardin, Judge Roy Bean, T.H. Burger, Pawnee Bill Lilly, Captain Jack Crawford, Wild Bill Hickock, Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, Sam Bass, the James, Younger and Dalton boys, and many others. |
