Nigeria has over the years invested in various projects to develop its Military capacity through a vibrant defense industry framework. This is in recognition of the numerous advantages of such initiatives. One of the major benefits of home-grown defense industry capacity is the gross reduction in military expenditure to purchase such elements as small arms, ammunition, personnel gears including uniforms etc. which account for larger percentages of recurrent spending on military hardware.
The Country currently spends Millions of Dollars in defense related procurement of APCs, Mortars, Light Aircraft and other hardware both new and fairly used which have relatively low use value. Having a home-grown defense industry enables the country to have cheaper hardware upgrading costs rather than recurrent purchase (especially with heavy duty hardware). This approach tends to be more progressive in keeping abreast of hardware update trends whilst enhancing the savvy and professional culture of trainers and trainee personnel. This is especially true of tanks, planes, choppers, boats and other heavy duty military hardware.
Setting up of local defense industries with capacity to produce and repair light arms and ammunition, mechanized vehicle assembly, shipyards and other laudable attempts have been made. Due to a variety of challenges, however, the country has not been able to achieve this feat.
